The common pawpaw is a small, deciduous understory tree known for producing the largest edible fruit native to North America. In spring, the tree produces unusual, maroon, bell-shaped flowers before the leaves fully emerge. In autumn, the foliage turns a brilliant, striking golden-yellow.
