Broadly ovate to cordate (heart-shaped) with three distinct lobes. The central lobe is usually the largest, giving the leaf a maple-like appearance.
Size
Approximately 2 to 5 inches (5-12 cm) in width. The leaves in the image appear to be within the 3-4 inch range, which is standard for a healthy climbing specimen.

Rarity
Very Common. It is a staple of traditional architecture (hence 'Ivy League') and is frequently found in gardens and urban parks.
Color & Pattern
Deep glossy green on the upper surface, paler green below. The veins at the base often show a slight reddish or pale yellow tint. In autumn, these leaves turn brilliant shades of scarlet, orange, and purple.

Description
Boston Ivy is a vigorous deciduous woody climber. It uses small, suction-cup-like adhesive pads on its tendrils to scale flat surfaces without needing additional support. While it looks like ivy, it is actually related to grapes. It produces inconspicuous greenish flowers followed by small, dark blue-black berries that look like tiny grapes but are inedible to humans.

Habitat
Thrives in various light levels from full sun to partial shade. Prefers well-drained, loamy soil. Commonly found climbing walls, fences, and large trees in urban and temperate forest settings.
Geographic Range
Native to East Asia (Japan, Korea, and China). It has been widely introduced and naturalized in eastern North America and Europe as an ornamental landscape plant.
Condition Notes
Excellent health grade. The leaves appear vibrant with no signs of chlorosis or significant pest damage. Some minor mechanical wear or nibbles are visible on the lower right leaf, but the specimen is otherwise thriving.
Interesting Facts
Despite its name, it is not from Boston and is not a true ivy (Hedera). The name 'Ivy League' for prestigious universities refers to the growth of this plant and its relative, Virginia Creeper, on the historic brick buildings.
Medicinal & Uses
Primary use is ornamental for wall coverage and soil erosion control. It provides excellent insulation and cooling for buildings in summer. There are limited traditional uses in East Asian medicine for pain relief, but it is not commonly used today.
Ecological Role
Provides cover and nesting sites for birds. The blue-black berries are a valuable late-season food source for many bird species, including cedar waxwings and cardinals.
Similar Species
Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia Creeper), which has 5 leaflets; Acer (Maple) leaves, which grow on trees rather than climbing vines; and Hedera helix (English Ivy), which is evergreen and has different lobe structures.
Foraging Tips
Look for the distinctive 'sucker' pads on the vine to confirm it is a Parthenocissus. Avoid eating the berries, as they contain calcium oxalate crystals.
Toxicity Warning
Moderately Toxic. The leaves and especially the berries contain raphides (calcium oxalate crystals). If ingested, they can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat, and in large quantities, kidney damage. The sap may cause mild skin irritation (dermatitis) in sensitive individuals.
